The history of Châtillon-en-Bazois is linked to that of the castle, ancient medieval fortress having belonged to the Count of Nevers. Located on a rocky outcrop, surrounded by the Nivernais Canal and the River Aron, this family home is a true haven of peace steeped in history. Ten centuries are told from this formidable, perfectly preserved castle. To visit in summer with its Park and Gardens.
A stone's throw from the castle, extend your walk in the town center at the foot of the church. In neo-Romanesque style from the 12th century, the Saint Jean-Baptiste church in Châtillon-en-Bazois also bears witness to the beautiful local heritage. Take advantage of your visit to admire its stained glass window of the Holy Family, recently restored.
After your escapade in the heart of the small streets of Châtillon-en-Bazois, let yourself be carried away by the Nivernais canal, by taking its towpath. The small paths will lead you to the discovery of numerous works of art:
- Le Mingot Canal Bridge which allows the Nivernais Canal to span the Aron river.
- La Coeuillon lock footbridge. Made of wood and 54 m long, it allows you to ford the Aron.
- La triple lock of Chavance, which allows the crossing of a difference in altitude of almost 7 meters with its three juxtaposed airlocks.
- Le Fleury Needle Dam ; one of the 124 needle dams remaining in France.

Crossed by numerous rivers, Châtillon-en-Bazois well deserves its appellation of fisherman's paradise : in the heart of the Nivernaise countryside, it is the ideal place to learn about the environment and discover the practice of fishing. Cast your lines in the Canal du Nivernais, you will catch white fish there, hornbeam, pikeperch, pike, tench et black bass.
Are you an inveterate and experienced fisherman? Practice your activity on the longest “Parcours Passion” in France in Eguilly, between Alluy and Biches. And to share your passion with family, or in the company of people with reduced mobility, several secure fishing areas offer the possibility of setting up without risk at the water's edge. If you're more of an evening person, catch carp on the night fishing route, at places called Mingot and Coeuillon.
Want a fun activity for the whole family? Why not go crayfish fishing in the Aron? This 2nd category river is full of these crustaceans, particularly between Mingot and Coeuillon. All you have to do is install your scales near the banks and wait a few minutes until the catch. This evening, it's certain: you're going to enjoy yourself!

The Canal du Nivernais is not just for boaters! Take a breath of fresh air on the Cycle route which runs along it, to discover differently magnificent varied and preserved landscapes. In the heart of nature, far from cars and the frantic pace of big cities, you can experience a serene experience, especially with young children.
Fan of hiking, Châtillon-en-Bazois and its surroundings will be sources of great discoveries for you. Between canal and bocage, let yourself be charmed by the diversity of the landscapes of Bazois: a privileged natural setting for discovering the territory along its small paths.
