The village of Ternant owes its fame to the triptychs preserved in its church. These 15th-century Flemish works were commissioned by the barons of Ternant: the Altarpiece of the Virgin by Philip, chamberlain to the Duke of Burgundy, and the Altarpiece of the Passion by his son Charles of Ternant, childhood companion of Duke Charles the Bold. These two remarkable masterpieces of sacred art in carved and painted wood, listed as Historic Monuments in 1881, were preserved in Ternant.
