The rocky spur that supports the town of Cercy occupies a geographical position too advantageous not to have been used by the population since very ancient times.
Also, the town of Cercy was protected by a stone wall, quarried locally during the Gallo-Roman period. This was the oppidum of "Cerciacum".
With 820 meters of ramparts and ditches, the town was well protected, and became one of the 32 castellanies of the Nivernais.
These ramparts, having become useless, were razed around 1750, leaving only the part necessary to retain the earth.
The site, which was still derelict a few years ago, has come back to life thanks to the courage of volunteers from a local association, and a walking trail has been created.
