La crypte romane d’Alluy

The church of Alluy, placed under the dual name of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, contains an often overlooked masterpiece: a set of wall paintings from the beginning of the 1913th century, housed in a crypt dating from the 1985th century and classified as a Historic Monument since XNUMX. This jewel of the Middle Ages was rediscovered during the construction of a new apse of the church in the XNUMXth century. The church in its entirety has been classified as a Historic Monument since XNUMX.
The crypt is located under the forechoir of the church. It is accessed by a small staircase. The decor accompanies the visitor and the faithful in their progress, from darkness to light.
There are therefore three levels of simple decoration composing a procession. The abundance of figures carrying candles recalls that this dark and underground place is dedicated to light. Two scenes are devoted to the crucifixion (East wall) and to the triumphant Christ, conqueror of death.
In order to preserve the frescoes, you are asked not to stay more than 10 minutes.
