In 1075, the Count of Nevers offered the site to the Abbey of Cluny, which founded a Benedictine priory there. The monks cleared part of the woods, cultivated the land thus exposed, and dug more than thirty ponds to raise fish. They gave the village its current appearance, which still gives the site all its charm. The priory building was much remodeled over the centuries. In the Burremont state forest, don't miss the three-hundred-year-old "Chêne du Tiers".
