Traces seem to attest to a Gallo-Roman occupation. The church of Isenay, of Roman origin but rebuilt in the 19th century, is said to have been built on the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Isis. In the 13th century, the priory established in Mazille experienced great prosperity. In the 18th century, the commune had 5 mills, including the one, now in ruins, of the priory. The town of Isenay overlooks the verdant valley of the Aron and the Canal du Nivernais, an area conducive to the gentle way of life.
