Initially solid companions of men for working the land and transporting driftwood, the beautiful white Charolais oxen, originating from Saône-et-Loire in the Arconce valley, have adapted to the poor lands of our region.
It is the story of the incredible expansion of the famous Charolais cow, from 1800 to the present day, that the Livestock and Charolais Museum aims to tell you.
It is also the story of the evolution of the fascinating profession of breeder-calrower, which has raised the Charolais breed to exceptional quality.
Taking advantage of a barren land, these enthusiasts have made the granite massif of Morvan a cradle of Charolais, a land of breeding, leaving the care of the fattening of their animals to the richer lands of Bazois, Auxois or from Autunois, to the plains of the Po in Italy.
From local livestock fairs and markets, these cattle have now conquered the global market, from Canada to Brazil, from Norway to China.
The story, finally, of ancestral know-how, of the secrets of a profession which must continually adapt to the challenges of our modern world, without compromising on quality.
So come in, cross the door of the museum, come and discover all this, and more: the Love of the Earth and those who live on it.
