It was from Paris's need for wood that the Canal du Nivernais was born for the floating of wood. Composed of 110 locks, including 32 on the Loire side and 78 on the Seine side, it allows the junction between the two basins of the Loire and the Seine. 180 km long, its route begins in the town of Saint-Léger-des-Vignes in the Nièvre and ends in Auxerre in the center of the Yonne. Today it is dedicated to pleasure boating and cycle touring, and is certainly one of the most beautiful canals in Europe. It is distinguished from the Burgundy canals by the presence of numerous engineering structures, such as the Mingot canal bridge or the Dirol movable bridge.
